Oh what could have been! A thrilling game that almost had the fairytale ending unfortunately saw us go out of the cup to Premier League giants Chelsea 3-1 at The Vic.
I think the first thing I have to mention is the buzz around the stadium. We could all sense there was an opportunity for us to progress despite the stature of the opposition. We fought hard and were rewarded with Tamas’s goal with only 20 mins or so to go in the game: the upset was on. It has been a long time since I’ve heard the place erupt as it did the second the ball hit the back of the net, it really did make your hairs stand up on end.
Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be though and a quick fire hat-trick from Nicolas Anelka meant it wasn’t to be two quarter-finals for us this season. I think all connected with Watford FC can be proud though; we showed a lot of grit and spirit not to mention a fair amount of quality on what is a deteriorating pitch.
We even had a great opportunity that could so easily have meant a return fixture at Stamford bridge but credit to Petr Cech for a big save to secure victory for the visitors.
This does, however, now mean we will be focused entirely on the remaining games we have in the league starting with a big week ahead with the visit of an impressive Swansea side followed by a trip up north to Blackpool on Saturday. Thankfully, results this weekend weren’t too damaging so a couple of wins and we could see a large jump up the table.
Other news from the week included a lot of build-up for the Chelsea match, and once again training was of a high standard and we were all able to return to normal after the time off we had due to the high amount of snowfall.
So, as I said, another massive week ahead - let’s make it a good one!
