The figure of 50 points was reached yesterday after a very accomplished performance away at Doncaster Rovers and a 2-1 victory.
The result means we are now eight points clear of trouble and still have Tuesday’s game in hand. It’s been quite a run that has seen us draw towards safety; in fact after 30 games we had 30 points so to have 50 points after 40 games is quite an achievement and certainly bodes well for next season.
The game itself was one that we looked relatively comfortable in until Doncaster responded towards the end with a fine finish of their own. Scott was required to make a couple of very good saves but in general we always looked like we were on top and an own-goal and a superb header from Don Cowie was enough.
Other than that it’s been a quiet week: back into training after a few days off thanks to the international break. Training has been of a high standard and continues to improve as Brendan has introduced many of the methods he used at Chelsea to our London Colney training pitches. The lads have really responded well to the training and I think the results of that can be seen on the pitch.
This week saw the introduction of Danny Rose on loan from Tottenham; first impressions have been positive, a tenacious midfielder who seems to possess a good deal of pace and a great left-foot shot...keep an eye out for that!
Yesterday was the start of a busy couple of weeks ahead for us. We face Southampton Tuesday which is still a very big game. A couple of wins this week and we could well find ourselves in the top half of the table for the first time in a very long time and, of course, keep Southampton firmly below us, so there’s no chance of us taking our foot off the pedal in the run-in.
We can still get a total of 68 points if we were to win our remaining games and, although it may seem a tough ask, we believe that has to be the aim. Who knows, with that total there may even be an outside chance of the play-offs! Unlikely maybe - but not impossible.
Bye for now.
